Phonetics Awareness Exercise

The letters used to spell words are not always the same as the sound we use to say the words.  For example, in the word “know,” we do not say the sound of the letter “k;” it is silent.  In the word “cough,” we say the letters “gh” as the “f” sound.  Say the following words to yourself and write the sounds you hear.  If the letters are silent, do not include them.  Focus more on the consonant sounds, rather than the vowel sounds.  For example, don’t be concerned about indicating whether a vowel has a long or short sound, like beat (long) and bet (short).  A number of examples have been given to demonstrate how your responses should be formulated.
